About Xkylar
Associated with glistening textures, melancholy melodies, captivating rhythms and sensitive lyricism, Xkylar is the product of singer-songwriter and producer, Skylar Steinberg. Born in Jacksonville, raised in Montreal and New York, based in LA.
"Super random, only spent a couple years there and then my family moved to Montreal, which is where my mom is from. I lived in between there and a town in upstate New York called Plattsburgh for the next 8 years. My mom had a dream of living in Malibu, so we moved and that's where I spent the rest of my childhood/teens. Now I go to USC and live in downtown LA." - Skylar via Medium
Formerly named Sky Renee in 2015 with her debut single "Good as Gone". Her early music as Sky Renee is more romantic and emotional when compared to her ventures as Xkylar.
"Emotional" is her first project to be released other platforms in 2019, and aims at discussing the complexities of emotion and love. The single and its EP is only available on her SoundCloud and it was shortly on other platforms before it was removed.
Her self-production style lends itself to versatility, drawing inspiration from RnB, Alternative Pop, House and Soul. Using music as an escape, she hopes to transport listeners to a thought provoking dream state. Inspired by people and the concept of love, her songs display an evocative sense of vulnerability and emotion, that will both compel and comfort you.
From a young age, Skylar always felt compelled towards music and writing poetry, however her passion for volunteering lead her to study Health and Disease at USC. Upon enrolling she used art and songwriting as a coping mechanism for the stress and pressures of entering college, sneaking away into the practice rooms at night and learning photoshop while studying for Organic Chemistry.
During her time in school, she performed frequently around LA, including the world famous Troubadour, opening for Grace Van Der Wall, and amassed an engaged online following via Instagram, through her unique artistic posts.
Producing her 2018 single "Why don't we dance more?" and several others, led to thousands of streams online as well as some pivotal collaborations. She works hard on releasing music videos and singles, her older music however being exclusively to SoundCloud and YouTube since 2015. Later, changing her name to XKYLAR in 2018 following her single "Free Myself".
