About Jay Michael

Jay Michael Brownlee was a typical teenager. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life after graduation but then he began playing the guitar his senior year in high school. It was always something Jay had wanted to do and when the opportunity arose he picked up the guitar and started to play. What he didn’t know then was how playing the guitar would impact his life starting him down a different path than what he had expected.

After graduation Jay started the band, Shudder, with his good friend Jason and at the age of 18 began to travel and tour as the band’s lead singer. It was during his years with Shudder that Jay felt God’s call on his life to write and record music. Shudder recorded 2 CD’s and several EP’s in the studio. They toured across the country with bands like Decypher Down, Disciple, Kids in the Way, Nevertheless, Spoken, Michael Tait, Storyside B, Willet, and Among the Thirsty.

After four years of touring and playing with the band, Jay found himself in a whole new place, recording his first solo CD, “Hippie Boy”, in 2008 under the name Jay Michael.

Jay says, “I feel like I have more experience now. My song writing has definitely progressed. My music now is more laidback and personal. It’s a compilation of past experiences, good and bad, most happening during my years with the band. A lot of these songs I wrote during the Shudder years but we couldn’t really record them as a band. Shudder’s music was a whole different genre.
Even though I miss all of the fun we had touring as a band, I still feel God’s call on my life to share my music full time. My faith affects every part of my life and that naturally spreads into my music. It’s the reason I do what I do. The greatest reward for me is when listeners take the music and lyrics to heart and are not just impacted emotionally but eternally.”

Even though the music has a more relaxed feel, “Hippie Boy” still has a rock edge bite which was ingrained from Jay’s years with Shudder. Jay Michael encourages single people to wait for the perfect, God-chosen mate in “Masterpiece”. He also encourages married couples to stay strong in their commitment to each other in “Hold On To Me”. Whether dealing with our own fragility and deep need for Jesus (“Fragile”) or the reality of how the truth of God’s Word can set us free (“The Truth”), the lyrics are simple yet profoundly impactful.

Jay Michael has been playing with bands like Capital Lights, This Beautiful Republic, and Remedy Drive. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
